Heart Health and Bioflavonoids

Imagine the impact of heart problems on your everyday life and bodily functions! The heart muscle pumps blood and oxygen through the body to keep us alive. Blood travels through elastic, muscular blood vessels to service the entire body and keep it going. There are three types of blood vessels:

•    Arteries
o    Carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to all of the body’s tissues
•    Capillaries
o    Small, thin blood vessels that connect the arteries and the veins; their thin walls allow oxygen, nutrients, carbon dioxide and other waste products to pass to and from organ cells
•    Veins
o    Blood vessels that take blood back to the heart; this blood has lower oxygen content) and is rich in waste products that are to be excreted or removed from the body

Heart health is one of the most important things to watch out for as you get older. All parts of the heart need to be working properly, and work together to bring oxygen to the tissues and give us life. Several steps can be taken to keep your heart healthy and live a longer, fuller life. Taking vitamins and supplements to address or prevent certain issues regarding heart disease now will pay off in the future. As antioxidants, bioflavonoids protect blood vessels and reduce platelet aggregation (acting as natural blood thinners). Some bioflavonoids, such as Quercetin, act as effective antioxidants inhibiting agents such as LDL cholesterol from causing oxidative damage to the body. Rutin and several other flavonoids may also protect blood vessels. Many bioflavonoids promote health by strengthening capillaries and other connective tissues in the body. Many studies have shown that bioflavonoids have the potential to help with other health issues, like cancer and diabetes, and research is being conducted to find out more.

Despite Down Economy, Supplement Users Still Going Strong

In this down economy, many consumers are cutting back considerably on spending. One area that could be hurt tremendously is the vitamin and supplement industry. When analyzing how funds are spent, many consider taking supplements a luxury, not a necessity. However, a new study shows that people who take vitamins and supplements generally continue to do so despite hard economic times. The survey, conducted by Ipsos-Public Affairs for the Council of Responsible Nutrition, found that:
•    51 percent of supplement users will not change their purchasing habits, despite economic troubles
o    13 percent of these respondents consider supplementation “essential”
•    30 percent consider price a big determiner in what brand they purchase, and may change brands accordingly
•    13 percent may purchase less in the future

It has been argued that purchasing and taking vitamins and supplements now will lower health care costs in the future. Living a healthy lifestyle is key to staying energized throughout the day, and supplements will nourish the body and help prevent future issues. There is great value in supplementation to live a longer, healthier life!I encourage anyone curious or interested in taking supplements to talk to their doctor and figure out what their body needs to function at optimum levels.  People are now seeing dietary supplement use an investment for their health, for now and for the future.

Energy Drinks - How Dangerous Are They?

Our modern world requires that we stay energized during long days, and there are both healthy and unhealthy ways to achieve alertness. High in caffeine and sugar, hundreds of energy drinks have been launched in the United States in the past few years. The popularity of energy drinks continues to soar, but they pose serious health risks and side effects like nausea, irregular heartbeat and ER visits due to all kinds of abnormal bodily reactions. Advertising campaigns, which primarily target teens and college-aged adults, promote the performance-enhancing and stimulant effects of energy drinks, but these come at a cost. A regular 12-ounce cola drink has about 35 milligrams of caffeine, and a 6-ounce cup of brewed coffee has 80 to 150 milligrams of caffeine. The caffeine content of energy drinks varies from 50 to more than 500 milligrams! Many are calling for regulation of energy drinks like soft drinks, so that the levels of caffeine can be limited.

Often energy drinks do not carry enough warnings for the high level of caffeine and sugars they contain, contributing to misinformation and abuse by young adults unaware of the effects these drinks have on their bodies. Large doses of caffeine can cause major problems for people who suffer from high blood pressure or heart disease. Even further, people who mix energy drinks and alcohol are putting themselves and others at risk. Caffeine in high doses can give users a false sense of alertness, which may cause a person to think they are not as intoxicated and keep drinking or try to drive. It is said that energy drinks in moderation are fine, but there are many other ways to stay energized without stimulants. Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and taking vitamins and supplements will give the body what it is lacking and keep you going all day long!
